Yesterday I met up with the real estate guy and put down my security deposit, after which I signed the lease. So for the next twelve months that place down in Newport is now officially mine, mine, all mine. My first month's rent is due in two weeks, and I'm still slightly worried about my ability to pull that off, but if it means I have to be poverty stricken for a week or two in order to finance that transaction, then so be it. It won't be the first time. In fact, Shannon and I lived a whole summer that way, and there have been lean times here, too. I'm sure there will be in the future as well. But I'm a survivor. I'm gonna make it. Money troubles don't hassle me. I can't be fated.
Now I'm in the moving boxes phase. I went to West Leb earlier today and raided a supermarket of all the boxes my little car could carry. Seriously. Not one more box could have been smushed inside there. All those boxes are now here in my little shoebox home. I should have spent the afternoon packing things up, but I was lazy and didn't. A few things got boxed, but for the most part I came down with a severe case of procrastination.
Which isn't to say that today wasn't totally unproductive. I went to Staples and had three copies made of Season One, and oh they look really good. Then I went to Borders and "proofed" it, which is to say I went page by page through it to make sure everything was intact and in the right order. It's less that I don't trust Staples to do it right, and it's more that I'm a persnickety Virgo who has to make sure everything is just so. And seeing as how I was the one who screwed it up the last time I sent out similar packages, I'm making doubly sure to cross all the i's and dot all the t's before anything goes anywhere.
I was going to make more copies, but I settled on the three for now. I have yet to write that letter to my teacher to see what she thinks, so there's no hurry on that one. Besides, I saved the master copy of the pages, and didn't have them bound together, so that I could make new copies later on when needed. Look how I'm even thinking ahead here, huh? The other reason for only doing three is I wanted to leave more open on my credit card just in case of a small emergency during the next few weeks. I don't want to get caught short.
Yeah, so the chapters are ready. Now I just have to get the three of them out to the proper place, which should happen sometime this week, I hope.
One other thing I didn't get done today was some writing. I stopped by Borders no less than three times today, and tables near the electrical outlets were unavailable each time. That's the problem with Borders -- it can be really hit or miss that way. I should just set up the laptop here and work, but for whatever reason this apartment has never been very conducive to working on the book. The next place should be, though. I figure without Borders I'm probably going to do most of the work on my currently hypothetical kitchen table, like I did in Turners Falls. At any rate, I'm planning to hit Borders early tomorrow morning and get some good writing in before I take the first load of boxes out to Newport in the afternoon.
I also have to call the phone company and figure out who to call about switching over the electricity to my name.
Tomorrow is a busy day.
